    Day 1

    The first prototype

    In February 2023 the founder's Moto Guzzi V85 TT, fitted with a taller windscreen, produced severe helmet buffeting at highway speed. Existing wind deflectors did not suit the motorcycle's styling, and the problem was a good candidate for a reverse-engineering project. The goal was a single part for personal use. The first step was a clear template cut to shape to establish where a deflector needed to sit.

    The template became a CAD model and, the same day, a first print. From there the process was print, test ride, revise. Roughly fourteen revisions were needed to reach the part sold today. With the 3D scanner and CAD workflow the company now uses, the same development would take about a day.

    Capturing the shape

    Without a 3D scanner, the next approach was photogrammetry: reference markers on the surface, photographs from every angle, and software to reconstruct the geometry. It could not resolve the tank's smooth curvature, and phone-based scanning applications proved similarly limited. Each attempt still refined the target shape.

    From one part to a business

    A photo of the finished pair, shared in a V85 TT owners' group, drew a substantial number of requests to buy one. de Byl Technologies was set up to meet that demand, and to gain first-hand experience in running an ecommerce business: manufacturing, fulfillment, international shipping, and customer support. From the outset it was intended to remain a small, focused shop.

Today

A small shop, at a larger scale

Well over a thousand orders later, the product line has reached far more riders than a single-model accessory would suggest. That is a credit to the customers, and the company works to earn it with a purchasing and support experience worth returning for.

The single printer of 2023 has become three larger, more capable machines, with further capacity planned. The catalogue continues to grow in what it offers and in what the shop can manufacture. The same tools and process are available to clients through engineering services: electrical and firmware design, mechanical design and prototyping, and on-site 3D scanning. At its core, de Byl Technologies is a solution-oriented engineering business.
