Differences of old PA6-CF vs new PC-CF

Bastian de Byl - September 25, 2023

After running producing several prototype pieces we have significantly improved our ability to create Grade A parts using a new material: Carbon Fiber Polycarbonate (formerly Carbon Fiber Nylon 6)

Details

The importance of the product change can be summarized by the fact that the materials strength, along with it’s carbon-fiber content stay the same. The base plastic used for the material, however, is changing which introduces some noteworthy differences between the polymers.

The main difference, visually, is that the Polycarbonate has a more glossy appearance as well as being slightly more black than the previous black-gray of the Nylon 6.

Material differences to note:

  • Polycarbonate blocks nearly all of the entire UV spectrum leading to significantly greater UV (sunlight) resistance than that of Nylon 6
  • Polycarbonate is more chemically resistant to acids, oils, greases, detergents, and alcohols though is not as resistant to ethanol (gasoline) as Nylon 6
  • Polycarbonate yields a superior strength and durability to Nylon 6
